Training

Mission and core values

The UAB Center for Palliative Care is committed to lightening the burden of suffering for patients, their families, their friends and their communities through collaborative research, clinical services, professional training, and outreach. As part of the core values of the UAB Center, education of the community and other health care professionals in order to increase knowledge concerning the purpose and scope of palliative care, through outreach programs, advocacy and professional training is a primary focus.

Priorities

Training

The Center for Palliative Care at UAB is an inter-disciplinary team and joint effort of the Schools of Medicine and Nursing. As such, the emphasis on training of both medical and nursing students in various arenas is paramount and the Center staff is actively involved in broadening the student perspective on palliative and end of life care through invited lectures, Scholars week rotations for medical students, and involvement in the medical student clinical curriculum.

Fellowships

The Center offers a one or two year fellowship training program in the field of palliative medicine with the goals of training additional health care providers in the realm of end of life care. Medical students, other graduate medical professionals, undergraduate student interns, and health care professionals are welcomed to the Center for educational experiences and rotations as well.

In addition, our professional staff provides educational opportunities and lectures for the general public related to end of life care and Hospice.

Media & Materials

The most recent educational material from the Center for Palliative Care includes a completed version of the work from Alabamians for Better Care at Life’s End called Burdens and Blessings. This is a video perspective of a patient and caregivers in a variety of settings that documents their personal experience with a loved one cared for by Hospice organizations in Alabama.
