Ways to Give
We rely on donors like you to help ensure that those in need will have access to care that helps them along their journey.
How can you help? There are several options for making a gift to the UAB Center for Palliative Care. Use the following link to access full information on giving:
Memorial gifts: To designate the UAB Center for Palliative Care as a recipient of gifts in memory of a loved one, the following language may be included in obituaries, death notices and printed programs for memorial services:
The family requests memorial gifts to the UAB Center for Palliative Care,
Room 219, CH19, 1530 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-2041.
UAB will send an acknowledgment to the donor, and will provide the family or other designated person(s) with a list of donors and their addresses for additional personal thank you cards.
To make an individual memorial gift: You may send a check to the UAB Center for Palliative Care, Room 219, CH19, 1530 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-2041. Credit card gifts are also accepted. To make such a gift, call (205) 975-0848 or (205) 975-5602.
Gifts of stock: Giving appreciated marketable securities to the UAB Center for Palliative Care may have special tax advantages.
Gifts via your will or estate plan: UAB also gratefully accepts gifts as part of the donor’s will, or as part of an estate plan. There are numerous types of planned gifts, some of which provide an income to the donor during his or her lifetime, and then provide a significant gift to UAB upon his or her death.
UAB will be happy to provide further information about these or other charitable arrangements, including Charitable Gift Annuities and Charitable Lead Trusts, to fit your individual financial situation and charitable objectives. Because aspects of some giving methods are highly technical or subject to different tax consequences based upon individual circumstances, UAB encourages you to consult with an attorney, accountant, or other qualified advisor. UAB welcomes the opportunity to work with these professionals to accomplish your objectives.
The 2006 Pension Protection/IRA Rollover option: For the next two years, people older than 70½ years can contribute up to $100,000 from one or more IRAs without paying tax on the distribution. The donor does not receive a tax deduction for the gift, but the tax break the donor receives by not paying tax on the IRA distribution makes this gift plan attractive to many. Gifts must be made to qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations (UAB does qualify); private foundations are ineligible to receive these gifts.
To accomplish the gift, the donor simply asks his or her IRA administrator to issue a check to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and to mail that check to the donor. The donor then sends it to UAB with a letter indicating how he or she wishes to direct the funds (in this case, to the UAB Center for Palliative Care). The IRA administrator should issue a 1099-R for the donor showing that a taxable distribution was made.
